Rock Climbing is a dangerous thing to do. It is possible to be seriously injured and killed rock climbing. Proper instruction, training, knot tying, and proper rope and safety equipment can reduce the risks or at least make you aware of them. Always use safety first as a guide line and triple check everything twice.

Learn your knots. Test your knots first. Only climb on a high quality dynamic rope that is in perfect shape and within it's falls rating. The rope is your friend, do not step on it, do not disrespect it, do not leave it out in the sun rain car or dirt. Retire old or damaged ropes. Rope bags are good ideas as is a cloth to keep the rope off the ground when belaying.

Wear a helmet, they work much better than nothing at keeping small rocks dirt and ice from severely injuring you hopefully. Are they annoying, clumsy, balance changing, disturbing and comfort level challenging? Sure they are! Wear one especially if belaying so the crap your partner kicks down on you doesn't leave big dents and get blood on the rope. Helmets work well and protecting you from many hazards and injuries so really its a good idea and practice. The first time a good sized rock bounces off, you will hopefully be wearing it and may laugh about what a great investment it was...I have! I love my helmet it has saved my day a couple times and deflected everything from twigs, dirt and pebbles to sandwich sized rocks.

Shoes, wearing good properly fitting climbing shoes makes a big difference. They can be resoled often when you wear the soles down, which can take a while.

Don't use bolts or pitons it's lame, it damages the rock plus it leaves and creates a future climbing or falling hazard or something to get cut blood on the rope and stitches from and is just totally uncool. If it can't be climbed without bolts then perhaps it is best to try a little harder. Bolts work well indoors for indoor climbing walls use good high quality bolts in constructing indoor walls and climbing gyms.

Climbing is just as much mental as it is physical perhaps more so. How you think effects how you climb. Fear is a paralyser and is to be avoided. Remove all negative thought from your mind.  Falling is failure. Balance is a summation of interacting and counteracting forces which defies gravity. Gravity is not your friend. Climb safely and climb tomorrow. Climb on!

Before climbing it is advisable to learn the basic safety and skills of rock climbing safety and knot tying from an experienced and knowledgeable climbing instructor or climbing guide.
