Laurel Highlands Information - Laurel Highlands History
The history of the Laurel highlands dates back to prehistory
with inhabitants who migrated across the land bridge. Pennsylvania habitation
dates to at least 9000bc evidenced by stone points and tools found in
archeological digs at rock shelters at various locations in the state. During
the early 1930s many archeological projects took place some at mounds shelters
and river basin sites. The area of Pennsylvania was covered with well
established indian paths that covered the state and served as the highways of
the settlers that colonized the region. The Monongahela indians occupied the
region of the laurel highlands building settlements in the saddlebacks of the
Allegheny mountains as evidenced by artifacts found in farm fields and by
archeologists. The Indians were quite friendly with early settlers and the
indian paths were busy and often indians would share a pipe or game with
settlers. The French and Indian war ushered in a new paradigm shift for SW
Pennsylvania it's native indian and European settlers and the forming of the
United Stated of America. Prior to the French and Indian war occurred the
peace of Aix-la-Chappelle in 1748 which called Europe's war of the Austrian
Succession and in America, King Georges War, a draw and returned all conquered
territories to pre war sovereignty. The British colonist captured Louisbourg
stronghold on Cape Breton Isle was returned to the French control. Another treat
was signed in 1748 at Logstown below the forks of the Ohio by Conrad Weister of
Berks County representing Pennsylvania which at the time has Quaker land owned
by William Penn, with the indians allowing Pennsylvanians to be welcome on
indian lands and broke exclusive French trading practices that the indians had
historically practiced. In 1749-1750 French expedition of Captain Pierre Celoron
de Bienville who set out from canada down the Allegheney River to the forks from
there down the Ohio River to the great Miami from there to Pickawillany North to
Fort Miami (Ft Wayne , IN today) up the Maumee River to Lake Erie and from there
back to Canada Bropping lead plates at the mouths of several streams where they
entered the Ohio and Allegheny claiming that territory for France.
In 1750 virginia land companies operating on a 1609 virginia charter claiming
land "from sea to sea West and Northwest" The French saw these treaties as a
sign of aggression and sent the Marquis Dusquesne to build a series of forts to
protect the lead plate line from further encroachment. in June 1752 the Canadian
Charles Langlade led a force of French and French allied indians that resulted
in the total destruction of Pickawillany. Three forts were built by the end of
1753, Presque Isle (Erie) , LeBoeuf (Waterford) and Machault (Franklin).
When our country was being settled the road west ran
through the Laurel Highlands. The Laurel Highlands was the gateway to the west
and the new frontier at that time. There is much history to explore and historic
sites to visit. There are covered bridges throughout the region to tour. The
whiskey rebellion started in the Laurel Highlands. George Washington owned a
mill here and was a frequent traveler of the region. There are many historic
sites and roads to tour. Rt 30 known as the Lincoln Highway is one of the oldest
roads in the region and was the interstate of the day, that settlers heading
west to seek their fate, fame or fortune traveled along. There are still many
log structures, barns, homes and cabins throughout the Laurel Highlands region
that are still in good condition and many beautiful old stone homes and barns.
Take some time to soak in the history that helped form the rest of the United
States of America. Historic sites are listed below.
